Retaining and Upholding Relationships with Haida Gwaii's Natural World Association
Reviving Connections with Nature
I’m thrilled to introduce you to Retaining and Upholding Relationships with Haida Gwaii’s Natural World Association. We are a newly formed and officially registered nonprofit dedicated to promoting wellness and cultural reconnection by integrating traditional Haida knowledge with forest therapy and immersive nature-based experiences.

Emerging from the Ocean, Rooted in the Forests
When Haida people emerged from the oceans near Towhill on North Beach, the land was inhabited by extraordinary supernatural beings. These beings shaped our ancestors' understanding of the environment, teaching them harsh but invaluable lessons about respect, survival, and connection. Over thousands of years, we have developed deep relationships with our vibrant mossy forests and volatile oceans and its original inhabitants, the ''sGaana'' Supernatural Beings —from unraveling the wisdom of our sacred plant medicines to discovering the spirits woven into every tree's sway, every stone's memory, every wave's embrace.
Today, as Haida people, we face a new challenge. Many of us spend much of our time indoors, disconnected from the very forests and waters where our knowledge and culture are rooted. It’s time to return to the natural world. It’s time to listen to the stories of the land and strengthen relationships with the beings who inhabit it. This is the mission of Retaining and Upholding Relationships with Haida Gwaii’s Natural World Association.
Our nonprofit is dedicated to integrating the ancient wisdom of Haida culture with modern practices like forest therapy. Together, we strive to honor the environment, preserve Haida traditions, and create meaningful connections for current and future generations.
Land (tl'agée) Matters
Haida Gwaii is more than just a place—it is part of who we are. The forests, shores, and waters hold stories that spoke to our ancestors and if we listen will speak to us. They shaped our traditions, formed our language (Xaad Kil), and continue to provide teachings about balance and stewardship.
The Supernatural Beings (sGaana)
There are many oral histories and stories about the supernatural beings who guided us in learning how to live harmoniously on our breathtaking archipelago of Haida Gwaii. They gifted us the wisdom of medicines drawn from the earth, shared lessons etched in the fabric of time, and guided us to flourish with reverence for all that encircles our lives. These beings still reside on the precious land and waters, and through the continued telling of their stories, their presence deepens our understanding of Haida Gwaii.
Forest (Adiidsii) Therapy
Modern science now validates what we instinctively know —time in the forest is a healer. Known as "forest therapy" or "forest bathing" in other parts of the world, this practice reduces stress, promotes well-being, and strengthens the connection between humans and nature.

How We’re Planning to Make a Difference
Retaining and Upholding Relationships with Haida Gwaii’s Natural World is our vision for hands-on, culturally enriching activities that will connect the community with the land, its history, and its future. Here’s what we’re working towards:

Forest Therapy
Our plan is to offer guided walks in the magical forests of Haida Gwaii, combining scientific forest therapy techniques with teachings from Haida culture, leaving participants refreshed and more connected to the environment.

Harvesting and Gathering events
We aim to host seasonal harvesting events—such as gathering tree cambium, berries, mushrooms, or natural materials that can be used for weaving, carving, or dyeing—providing a space for artists, creators, and community members to connect with nature's rhythms. These events are designed to help participants reconnect with the natural cycles of the land, fostering a deeper understanding of seasonal changes while sharing and preserving traditional knowledge and practices passed down through generations.

Storytelling and Cultural Preservation
We hope to preserve and honor the rich oral traditions of Haida people by sharing the captivating stories of the supernatural beings who have shaped every corner of Haida Gwaii. These tales hold deep significance, offering insights into the history, values, and spiritual connections we have with the land, sea, and sky. Through these stories, we aim to keep the wisdom and heritage of Haida people alive for future generations.

Finding wonder around us
Fostering a sense of wonder and curiosity for the natural world is at the heart of what we do. When we wonder, we learn. Yet, in the pursuit of studying environmental science or related fields, that sense of wonder can sometimes be overlooked. Many educational approaches focus solely on facts, classifications, and scientific details, losing sight of the magic and curiosity sparked by nature itself. Exploring and learning about the environment—whether in a forest, along a beach, or by the water—should evoke a sense of wonder. It represents a powerful yet often overlooked approach to learning.
At our organization, we aim to nurture that spark of curiosity and transform it into a lasting inspiration. We believe in connecting with the environment, with others, and with ourselves. By recognizing the beauty around us and appreciating what we have, we develop a greater sense of respect—one that motivates us to care for the land and treat each other with kindness.
Through promoting respect for nature and one another, we hope to inspire more compassion and positivity in the world. Together, we can create meaningful connections and foster a brighter, more sustainable future.

E-bike exploration
E-bikes offer an exceptional means to explore the stunning landscapes of Haida Gwaii, allowing riders to reach remote areas that may be challenging to access by foot or traditional vehicles. As you ride an E bike, you not only travel effortlessly but also engage with the everything around you. This mode of transportation enhances your adventure, making it both enjoyable and efficient, while providing a unique opportunity to connect with the environment in a meaningful way.

Expressions of Care
Every initiative we’re planning is rooted in love and respect for Haida Gwaii. From artist collaborations to environmental stewardship projects, we’re dedicated to expressing care for the land, its beings, and its future.
